Do you like the outdoors? Want to experience all that Brazil has to offer when it comes to beautiful waterfalls, hiking trails and discovering small little towns nestled into the mountains? Then pack up the car and start your 3.5 hour drive to Visconde de Maua which is in between Rio and Sao Paulo in an area of environmental protection at the top of Serra da Mantiqueira on the border with Itatiaia National Park. The area is full of adorable hotels, hidden trails amidst the woods, waterfalls and delicious restaurants serving typical Swiss fondue dishes and trout; the specialty of the region.
When planning a romantic weekend in the mountains Vilarejo Acaua is the perfect destination for you. The location of this beautiful hotel is in the heart of Serra da Mantiqueira, a region rich in waterfalls located on the boarder of the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais in Visconde de Maua. It is close to the main town of Visconde de Maua and only a short drive to Maringa (both Rio and Minas sides) which makes it easy to explore the waterfalls and try a variety of nice restaurants. The hotel itself is very peaceful; secluded in the mountains with a river running along side it so you can enjoy the noise of water flowing while you stroll along the property.
Your romantic weekend kicks off as soon as you see your cottage (there are 8 in total) which has a hammock hanging out front. Each cottage has a fire place (perfect for those chilly nights) and as you can see from the photo above there is a large jacuzzi tub built for 2, surrounded by candles in the back of the room- straight out of a romantic novel. The bathrooms have heated floors which was a highlight for me since it gets quite cold at night! But drifting off to the sound of a crackling fire might be the best part of the experience, nothing beats it.
The grounds provide a beautiful, fun and relaxing environment with incredible amenities! During the day you can catch some rays at the pool + hot tub (above), relax in the spa which includes sauna, steam room and massage room, or you can work up a sweat on the tennis court, in the gym (which better then your normal hotel gym) or meditate in the yoga studio.
At night, if it’s raining you might not want to leave the property (plus the unpaved roads can be a bit scary/dangerous in the rain)! There is a ‘game center’ (below) which includes a pool table, ping pong table, poker table, wine cellar/bar, piano, karaoke lounge and a full cinema (with lots of dvd’s to choose from)…all the makings of the perfect night. Since the rain was coming down pretty hard we opt’d for raiding the wince cellar and having a cheese plate (below) which was one of the best I’ve seen in my time in Brazil! If you are looking for the perfect hotel for a romantic weekend in the mountains of Brazil, I highly recommend Vilarejo Acaua, I definitely plan on heading back soon!
