A friend of mine told me about Ski Bunda before I left for my trip; so I made sure that I would be able to include it on one of our sand dune tours. There are certain dunes that allow ‘Ski Bunda‘; and you will know right away when you see a crowd of people standing on the top of a very high dune (above). For R$5 (US$2.5), a guy will hand you a board with some wax on it; you then sit with your butt on the piece of wood and slide down dune (sometimes into water depending on where you are). I know this sounds a little crazy…..Believe me when I first got there, and saw people sledding down this giant dune, I definitely had flashbacks to my high school days in Providence RI sledding down the giant Moses Brown School hill in the winter (that hill was huge and I screamed every time!)!! OK, HERE I GO!!
I will admit, sliding down and realizing you are only sitting on a small piece of wood is a bit terrifying, however it is a complete blast once you decide to go for it! I felt like a kid screaming my way down a mountain all over again it was so much fun! FYI to slow down, dig your hands further behind you! Sledding down was awesome, but now how do you get back up?! You have 2 options: 1. If there is space on the buggy at the bottom when you land, grab a lift 2. There is a rope hooked up to the top of the dune and you use it to scale up the dune (see below). FYI this option is a serious workout!
