Many cities in Europe and South America have a ‘Mercadão of some sort, i.e. a large specialty market offering the freshest and largest varieties of fruits, spices, meats/fish/poultry, nuts and more. Located in São Paulo’s Centro neighborhood in a beautiful industrial style building is Mercado Municipal de São Paulo. Besides aisles and aisles of specialty vendors there are a number of restaurants and prepared food places. I am told you will find the best mortadella (bologna) sandwich in Brazil at this Mercado! Check it out:
The area is a little dodgy with lots of vendors and random shops (i.e. not the nicest area), the streets get very crowded so hold on to your bags. For the freshest and most interesting ingredients it is definitely worth the trip downtown.
